One of the most ornamental small palms of Cuba, Coccothrinax garciana has slender, clustering stems rarely more than 3 m tall that are clothed in wiry leaf sheaths with spine-like fringes. The smallish, perfectly circular leaves have numerous, very thick and rigid segments that are densely silvery below. The inflorescences are slightly longer than the leaves and hold purplish pink fruits. It is native to open forests on rocky soils and serpentine savanna in Holguín province in eastern Cuba at low elevations. In cultivation, it makes an exquisite ornamental for tropical and some warm temperate climates, but like many of the best palms from Cuba is quite slow to establish and fetches high prices when established. While classified as threatened in its natural habitat, the palm is also exceedingly rare in cultivation.
