A superb Celmisia, native to montane grassland or rocky slopes on the South Island of New Zealand. It forms an open cluster or mat of rosettes from an underground rootstock of broad leaves to 30 cm (12 in.) long that are densely golden hairy and somewhat resemble rabbit ears. The daisy-like flowers are held just above the leaves. In cultivation, it is easily grown and prefers a lightly shaded, moist but well drained position in a temperate climate. It dislikes excessive heat and humidity. Seeds may benefit from cold stratification for up to 3 months.
