An evergreen shrub or small tree to about 4 m tall with small, simple leaves and terminal inflorescences that sport spectacular red to pink, tubular flowers with white tips and red to pink bracts followed by small, purplish fruits that are edible and sweet. The flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds. Cavendishia bracteata is widespread and fairly common in montane and cloud forests from southern Mexico to Bolivia between 1300 and 3500 m and sometimes grows as an epiphyte on larger trees. In cultivation it is rare outside of its native range but adapts easily to cool, humid climates that lack extremes of heat or cold. This form originates in Quindío province in Colombia around 3000 m.
