This small ginger produces leafy shoots in spring to about 60 cm (2 ft.) tall with a very attractive, terminal inflorescence of red bracts and yellow flowers. Native to the Himalayas to 2400 m (7900 ft.) to southern central China, it is one of the hardiest gingers. It is best suited for temperate zones, does not require much warmth to grow and its underground rhizomes can survive even harsh winters if well mulched.
