A fast growing, large shrub or small tree rarely more than 10 m tall with very finely bipinnate leaves and upright inflorescences with showy, powderpuff-like, red flowers. Calliandra houstoniana is originally native to humid forests in Mexico and Central America but has naturalized elsewhere. It is an important agroforestry plant.
