The Madagascar Palmyra Palm is a massive and stunning plant. It grows a smooth, solitary, light gray trunk to 16 m (60 ft.) tall with a bulge in the middle that can reach a diameter of over 80 cm (32 in.), and carries a full, rounded crown of very large, fan-shaped leaves. The seeds are the size of small coconuts, to 19 cm (7.5 in.) long, and produce a very large sinker when they germinate. They should be sprouted in very tall containers or planted in their permanent position in the garden. Borassus madagascariensis is native to drier western Madagascar. It prefers full sun and does best in seasonally dry subtropical and tropical climates.
