An unusual and rare perennial from the high Andes between central Peru and western Bolivia, where it is found on steep, rocky slopes between 3200 and 4600 m. It forms upright, arching stems to 3 m tall with narrow, erect, grayish leaves and a terminal cluster of pale green flowers, rising from an underground tuber. Bomarea involucrosa is largely unknown in cultivation but would make a fascinating ornamental for the temperate garden.
