A spectacular, small to medium-sized, evergreen tree with simple, glossy green leaves and masses of scented white flowers. Backhousia citriodora is native to forests in eastern Queensland, Australia. In cultivation it adapts to a wide range of tropical and warm temperate climates. It makes an excellent avenue and shade tree and has gained much popularity as a culinary flavoring. All of the plants parts have an exquisite lemon scent. Especially the leaves are used for flavoring and are said to have a purer, cleaner flavor than lemon grass and lack the acidity of lemons.
