This vigorous, dry deciduous liana can grow to 10 m or more and sports heart-shaped leaves to 25 cm wide and enormous, strange, trumpet or heart-shaped flowers to 20 cm across with a tail to 60 cm long. The flowers are greenish white with dark purplish veins and smell of rotting meat to attract flies as its pollinators, which it captures temporarily until they have fulfilled their purpose. Each flower lasts for two days. On the first day it is in the female phase and attracts flies with a foul smell. Flies that follow this to the source are trapped by downward facing hairs in the pouch of the flower to ensure pollination. On the next day, the flower changes to the male phase and pollen is deposited on the flies, the odour disappears, the hairs shrivel and the insects are released. Aristolochia grandiflora is widespread in rainforests and thickets from Mexico to Ecuador below 1300 m. Because of its impressively large flower it is much sought after as an ornamental plant for tropical climates. It also has several uses in traditional medicine.
