This perennial grass is native to Eastern and Southern Africa, from Nigeria to Kenya, South Africa and Madagascar, growing in savannas and grasslands, on rocky hillsides and in disturbed areas. It reaches about 1 m (3 ft.) in height and forms tufts, with unbranched culms, and purple inflorescences, very conspicuous in summer time. An attractive ornamental for tropical and warm temperate, humid climates. Traditionally, Aristida junciformis was used for making brooms.
