The largest of the Archontophoenix, this species grows a smooth, gray trunk to 25 m (80 ft.) tall, topped by a green crownshaft that carries several ascending, pinnate leaves with stiff leaflets, green above and silvery underneath. Noteworthy is its massive inflorescence that holds thousands of attractive, red fruit. A. maxima is native to wet forests in the Atherton Tableland, Queensland, Australia between 800 and 1200 m (2600 and 3900 ft.)
