Pontederia 'Sopchoppy' is a 2023 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a Victor Lambou collection from Wakulla County, Florida, near the town of Sopchoppy. We are mystified why this amazing Southeast native marginal aquatic isn't more widely grown by gardeners with wet soils. Named after Italian botany professor, Guilio Pontedera (1688-1757), Pontederia cordata var. cordata has a wide range from Canada south to Florida, and west to Texas, where it is found in shallow water and consistently moist soils. Pontederia cordata 'Sopchoppy' forms a slowly spreading patch to 3' tall x 4' wide in five years. The stalks, which end in cordate green leaves, are topped with taller flower stalks of mauvy blue flowers which rise several inches above the foliage, starting for us in mid-June. This native edimental is consumed by humans, as well as serving as sunning perches for dragon/damselflies.
