    Introduction

The Leonberger is a breed that originates from Germany.

This multiple use breed is a king's family favorite.

The Leonberger was almost extinct at the end of World War I, but was rescued by several German breeders who were dedicated to preserving this dog.

They are considered one of the oldest German dog breeds.

The Leonberger continues to be used as a worker's dog and a companion dog in Germany, France, and Scandinavia. However, they are relatively rare in other countries.

    Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Leonberger in 2010.

These medium energy dogs are known as friendly, gentle, and playful.

These stable dogs are perfect for children, other dogs, and other pets. However, they should not be left alone for long periods of time and will bark and become destructive if bored, under-exercised or lonely.

They are soft, protective, and confident.

They need a very dedicated owner.

    Appearance

The Leonberger is a large-sized dog that has a cool and elegant physical appearance and presents a strong impression.

    Its stature is sturdy.

Although it is big and dashing, the Leonberger's dog has a very gentle facial expression. It is no wonder that some people call it a "soft giant dog".

The Leonberger has a double coat. The outer layer is long, plentiful, and straight while the inner layer is thick and dense.

It also has a mane on the chest coat, around the neck, and on the front legs.

The fur on the back is abundant and thick.

The breed continues to shed its fur during the seasonally.

    Nutrition

It is recommended to provide feed formulated to large-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.

    Grooming

The Leonberger is a type of dog that requires high maintenance.

They require daily brushing to remove tangled and dead hair and to minimize shedding.

Bathing should be done as necessary.

It is important for the owner to clean the ears and teeth regularly.

This breed has a relatively short lifespan. They are susceptible to health problems such as hip dysplasia, OCD, Addison's disease, entropion, ectropion, osteosarcoma, bloating, and hypothyroidism.

Leonberger can be sensitive to some drugs such as sulpha, sedative, and anesthesia.

    Exercise

The Leonberger is not recommended to stay in an apartment. It needs daily exercise, family interaction, and mental stimulation.

This breed is suitable to be maintained in a large fenced or rustic yard.

The Leonberger loves swimming, hiking, backpacking, running, and family activities. It also excels in agility, tracking, therapy, and water saving.

    Pet Crate Size

Pet Crates Direct recommends a 54" dog crate* for most adult Leonbergers.
