Identification & Behavior: ~55 cm (21.6 in). The male Rosy-billed Pochard has a distinctive coral red bill and knob at the base of the culmen, dark blue head and neck, black breast and back, and light gray sides. The female is brown with darker backs, whitish vent, white throat and upper neck, and pale eye-ring. The female Rosy-billed Pochard is lighter in overall coloration and larger than the similar female Southern Pochard.

Status: The Rosy-billed Pochard is considered a vagrant species. The only evidence of its occurrence in Peru is a photograph taken in Madre de Dios, Southeast Peru.

Name in Spanish: Pato Picazo.

Sub-species: Rosy-billed Pochard (Netta peposaca), Vieillot, 1816.

Meaning of Name: Netta: Gr. Duck. peposaca: Guarani (Native Brasilian). Pink or red beak. A duck with pink or red bill.
