Pumi? Sloughi? Meet the breeds new to Westminster dog show this year

Almost every year, the Westminster Kennel Club dog show welcomes some new breeds. This year, there are three: the American Hairless Terrier, the Pumi and the Sloughi.

The breeds were recognized by the American Kennel Club last year, and became eligible to compete at Westminster for the first time this year. Westminster, the most prestigious dog show in the U.S., will take place Feb. 12-14 in New York City.

Here's a look at the characteristics, provided by Westminster Kennel Club, of the new breeds that will be welcomed this year:

The American Hairless Terrier

Derived from the Rat Terrier breed, the American hairless was developed in the United States in the early 1970s. Although these dogs are usually hairless, they can also have a coat. These dogs were bred to hunt rats and vermin. It's described as a lively, intelligent and friendly companion that loves to be indoors with its owner. It will appear this year in the terrier group.

Pumi

An ancient Hungarian herding breed, developed by shepherds who wanted a dog that would herd cattle, sheep and pigs. Described by the kennel club as a medium-sized,

spirited dog with wavy and curly hair that is intelligent, willing to work, and a quick learner. "Because the breed likes to be where all the action is, it excels as a true family friend as well as a dog sport competitor," the kennel club stated. It will be shown in the Herding Group.

Sloughi

This rare sighthound comes from the North African countries of Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Algeria. It was bred to course gazelles, jackals, wild boar, hares and rabbits. The short coat comes in all shades of sand from light cream to red, according to the kennel club. "While devoted to its owner the Sloughi may be aloof around strangers," the kennel club states. It will appear in the Hound Group.
