An NGS-based phylogeny of Orthotricheae (Orthotrichaceae, Bryophyta) with the proposal of the new genus Rehubryum from Zealandia

Draper et al. (2022). Frontiers in Plant Science 13:882960

Link to paper.

The recent taxonomic and systematic progresses have led to a rearrangement at the generic level of Orthotricheae, providing a new framework to link environment to patterns of diversification of this tribe. Here, we use nuclear loci targeted with the GoFlag 408 enrichment probe set to generate a well-sampled phylogeny with well-supported suprageneric taxa and increasing the phylogenetic resolution within the two recognized subtribes. Specifically, we show that several genera with Ulota-like morphology jointly constitute an independent lineage. Within this lineage, the recently described Atlantichella from Macaronesia and Western Europe appears as the sister group of Ulota bellii from Zealandia. This latter species is here segregated in the new genus Rehubryum. Assessment of the ecological and biogeographical affinities of the species within the phylogenetic framework suggests that niche adaptation (including climate and substrate) may be a key evolutionary driver that shaped the high diversification of Orthotricheae.

Insights into the evolutionary history of the subfamily Orthotrichoideae (Orthotrichaceae, Bryophyta): new and former supra-specific taxa so far obscured by prevailing homoplasy.

During the last two decades, Orthotrichoideae has undergone an extensive revision that has led to its rearrangement at the generic level. However, their phylogenetic relationships and inferences on the evolutionary patterns that have driven the present diversity have little advanced. In this study, we present a dated molecular phylogenetic reconstruction at the subfamily level, including 130 samples that represent the 12 genera currently recognized within the subfamily, and the analysis of four molecular markers: ITS2, rps4, trnG, and trnL-F. We also analyze 13 morphological characters of systematic value to infer their origin and diagnostic utility within the subfamily.

Let’s make Pulvigera great again: re-circumscription of a misunderstood group of Orthotrichaceae that diversified in North America

Lara et al. (2020). Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society 193: 180–206.

Orthotrichum lyellii was described in 1878 based on the crisped leaves with plane margins, on its elongated and branched stems, and on the presence of brood-bodies. In Europe, these characters remain constant, but in North America several similar forms lacking propagules have been described either at the specific or infraspecific level. These were all reduced to synonyms of O. lyellii. In 2015, Orthotrichum was divided, and O. lyellii was transferred to Pulvigera, a genus thus far considered to be monospecific. In this study, the variability of P. lyellii is analysed in an integrative taxonomic framework. All the sources of evidence suggest the existence of four different taxa in North America.

Do mosses really exhibit so large distribution ranges? Insights from the integrative taxonomic study of the Lewinskya affinis complex (Orthotrichaceae, Bryopsida)

Vigalondo et al. (2019). Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 140: 106598

The strikingly lower number of bryophyte species, and in particular of endemic species, and their larger distribution ranges in comparison with angiosperms, have traditionally been interpreted in terms of their low diversification rates associated with a high long-distance dispersal capacity. This hypothesis is tested here with Lewinskya affinis (≡ Orthotrichum affine), a moss species widely spread across Europe, North and East Africa, southwestern Asia, and western North America. Our results show that L. affinis is a complex of no less than seven distinct species that can be morphologically identified with a minimal error rate. None of these species exhibit a trans-oceanic range, suggesting that the broad distributions typically exhibited by moss species largely result from a taxonomic artefact.

Tackling a long-standing problem: Typification of Orthotrichum crispum, Ulota crispula and Ulota intermedia (Bryopsida: Orthotrichaceae)

Caparrós et al. (2016). Taxon 65: 862–866.

Previous taxonomic studies on the Holarctic species of Ulota, including both morphological and molecular approaches, distinguished Ulota crispa, U. crispula and U. intermedia as separate taxa worthy of recognition at the specific level, instead of belonging to a single, highly variable species (U. crispa). Available original material for these three names has been studied and in several cases these are heterogeneous, containing two or even three of these closely related species. We discuss the nomenclatural history of each species and the extant original specimens from which lectotypes for Orthotrichum crispum, Ulota crispula and U. intermedia are designated.
