This species known as the Amazonian zebra plant is a very hardy easy-to-grow plant that does well in a medium size orchid bark mix, although often people in South Florida grow them in pro mix without any issues as well. These plants have beautiful zebra-striped spiky leaves that when grown in strong sunlight the darker green areas turn black.
Here in Minnesota winter light causes them to lose the darker coloration until summer. When grown out of doors in stronger light they resume their blackish colored stripes. The flower spikes are about 18” tall and have a branching habit with red and yellow flowers. The plants we offer are large specimens we with at least a 32" leaf span and have been in our collection for many years. These are difficult to find now, especially at the sizes we offer.
**Please note: You will receive a large mature growth, which may have a new second growth emerging, or one old, previously bloomed growth with a mature, unbloomed new growth as well. These plants slowly die off once they have flowered, but not without producing a new growth beforehand. The old growths will completely die off within one to two years after the new growth matures.
