Common Name Fragrant Ladie's Tresses

Found in Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma in woodlands, grassy alkaline marshes, and wet depressions in grasslands as a medium szied, cold growing, aquatic to semi-aquatic terrestrial species with a slender to stout, pubescent above, blunt to capitate haired stem carrying 3 to 6, linear-oblanceolate, bourne on the lower part of the stem leaves that blooms in the fall till spring on an erect, terminal, to 3' [to 90 cm] long, many flowered, spicate inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate, longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying strongly fragrant flowers.
