Found in Oaxaca and Chiapas states of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panam and Colombia in wet montane forests as a medium to large sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte at altitudes of 1500 to 2500 meters with often glossy yellow green, ovoid or elliptic-oblong, laterally compressed, apically tapering pseuobulbs partially enveloped by several distichous, imbricating, lower leafless, upper leaf-bearing sheaths and carrying 2 apical, thin, narrowly-linear-ligulate, leathery, acute, conduplicate below into the base leaves that blooms in the winter and spring on an axillary, erect, to 16" [40 cm] long, racemose, few to many [5 to 10] flowered, racemose inflorescence with the fragrant flowers all together towards the apex that arises from the basal sheaths of a recently mature pseudobulb and has a zig-zag rachis.
