Common Name or Meaning The Long Rooted Barbosella

Flower Size 1" [2.5 cm]

Found in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru at elevations of 950 to 1900 meters as a mini-miniature sized, warm to cool growingcaespitose to shortly repent epiphyte with short, cylindrical ramicauls enveloped basally by pale sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, linear-ligulate, obtuse, gradually narrowing below into the canaliculate, narrowly petiolate base leaf that blooms in the fall on a singular, erect, thin, 4.4" [11 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence with a cucullate-ovate, acuminate, enveloping the pedicel floral bract.

"Between the large B cucullata and the small B prorepens and approaching both species when close to their prospective sizes making identification a matter of personal judgement. Typically B dolichorhiza is shortly repent to caespitose, often forming dense masses with peduncles 2 to 3 times longer than the narrow leaves. Except for the size difference all 3 species concepts are similar. The sepals of B dolichorhiza are between .6 and 1" [1.5 to 2.5 cm] long, and those of B prorepens betweem .24 to .52" [6 to 15 cm] long, and those of B cucullata exceed 1" [2.5 cm] sometimes even exceeding 1.6" [4 cm]. In all three concepts the flowers range from yellow to brown to purple." Luer 2000
