Common Name Clifton's Anguloa [English Orchid Grower -First bloom 18-1900's] - In Colombia Cuna de Venus

Flower Size 3 3/4" across [to 9 cm]

A large, Colombian, cool growing terrestrial species found at elevations of 1000 to 1800 meters that is similar in flower to A. clowesii Lindley but cliftonii has a purplish brown streaked side lobe of the lip, while A. clowesii is uniformly yellow. Blooming in the spring and summer often on 2, erect, long, bracteate, single flowered inflorescence that arise basally as the new growths arise in the late winter with a large, waxy, solitary, fragrant flower. This species has clustered ovoid-oblong pseudobulbs carrying 2 to 3, plicate, elliptic-oblong, acuminate, subundulate, attenuate into the base leaves and becomes a large plant.
