Xeranthemum annuum

A group of small annual herbs from the Mediterranean related to Carlina. This species is one of the oldest and perhaps best known of the everlastings.

A branching annual growing 25-50cm high; the leaves are silvery, oblong to lanceolate and 50mm long; the flowers are shiny, papery, double, in colours of white, pink, purple and dark violet in solitary disk flowers to 4cm across.

This pretty annual prefers a well-drained soil on the dry side. It will tolerate drought but a better plant is to be had with regular watering. It also prefers at least half the day in the sunshine. 

It makes a very good cut or dried flower. For dried flowers, it should be cut as the buds are opening. If they are left to dry on the plant, they turn tan or light brown.

This plant grows readily from seed.
