Keating Inquirer Stot Writer "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is a film with such a loyal band of devotees that the TLA Cinema at Fourth and South Streets has been screening it at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays for the last two years. The Society Hill Playhouse, at Ninth and Lombard Streets, six blocks from the TLA, obviously hopes to cash in on this built-in audience with a production of "The Rocky Horror Show," the stage musical on which the movie is based. At least one would hope that such an opportunistic rationale guided the playhouse's decision.

One would hate to think that the company actually believed that this ludicrous musical was worth its trouble or any theatergoer's time and money. As theater, "The Rocky Horror Show" is a horror. It is an outlandish, unfunny spoof of the horror movie genre, cast in the form of a rock musical. Instead of Dr. Frankenstein, we have Dr.

Frank 'N Furter, a transvestite from the planet Transylvania, who, instead of creating a monster, makes the well-proportioned Rocky with whom he can satisfy, in part, his bisexual yearnings. Brad and Janet are an innocent young couple whose car breaks down on a dark and rainy night, forcing them to take refuge in Dr. Frank 'N Furter's mansion. Both Brad and Janet are romanced by the lusting Frank 'N Furter, who, before the show ends, turns everybody into a transvestite prancing around the stage in black underwear. So much for the plot, which would not be so hard to take if it were a vehicle for humor and good music.

Unfortunately, Richard O'Brien, who wrote the book, music and lyrics for this trashy burlesque, provides neither. Whenever the plot and become understandably frightened at the prospect of death, we cannot feel for them. We are still anticipating the next bon mot. The quality of any production of "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" succeeds or fails entirely on the performances of the actors who play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The Repertory Company is fortunate to have Barry Sattels and Daniel Oreskes, who are quite good in the lead roles.

The small, dark Oreskes is an animated, cocksure, cynical Guildenstern. The tall, light Sattels' Rosencrantz is a diffident, bumpkinish sort who defers to the brilliance of Guildenstern but is sharp enough to point out his friend's verbal excesses. The two played the roles last year, and their timing, so essential to deliver successfully Stoppard's machine-gun dialogue, is finely honed. Joseph Aufiery, artistic director of the Repertory Company, has a fine time with the role of the leader of the players who perform the famous "play within a play" that Hamlet stages to discomfit Claudius. The role, of this bombastic charlatan is one that any actor would relish, for it provides a perfectly legitimate opportunity to overact.

Aufiery's direction is smoothly expert. Clever use of lighting and in some cases absolute darkness produce effects that more than compensate for the Repertory Company's unsophisticated stage. "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" will be performed Thursday through Saturday through Dec. 16 at the Repertory Company, 1924 Chestnut St. By Douglas J.

Keating Inquirer Safl Ytiter "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" is back again at the Repertory Theater and in good form. The company version of Tom Stop-pard's play that takes two minor characters from "Hamlet" and gives them verbal lives of their own was first staged last year. Stoppard loves words, and words are what this play is about. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the characterless friends of Hamlet who accompanied the prince to England and were killed for their trouble, become in Stoppard's hands a wisecracking, riddle-spouting comedy team, a sort of high-toned, abstruse Abbott and Costello engaging in a succession of literate "Who's on First?" routines. In "Hamlet" Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were mere ploys to move the plot.

In their own play they are the principals moved by the plot of "Hamlet." While they clown, flip coins and talk, talk, talk, "Hamlet" moves on, and they are swept inexorably to their doom. Stoppard's Idea of bringing Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to life was brilliant, and the structure of the play is ingenious. But "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" ultimately fails because the playwright becomes so fascinated with word play that he neglects to make real people out of poor old and G. Even though they do a lot of talking, they are as characterless in Stoppard as they are in Shakespeare. Consequently, in the last act when they realize that they are doomed line or humor sags which is often he throws in a rock 'n' roll song, and the cast frugs and twists around to a monotonous beat.

The Society Hill Playhouse production of this monster of a musical is enthusiastic and energetic but has little else to recommend it. Keith Rosell, bearded and mincing about in sequined tights, gives a sufficiently absurd performance as the kinky doctor. Joe Pennisi as Brad, Michele Loor as Janet and Merrill Ivor as Rocky seem to think that the way to satirize the bad acting of horror to act poorly themselves. The singing voices rate from barely passable (Rosell and Miss Loor) to nonexistent (Pennisi and Ivor). The background chorus, however, is tuneful enough to bail out the generally poor performances by the principal singers.

Although the cast attacks the musical numbers with gusto, director Jay Kogan crowds so many rock 'n' rolling bodies onto the small stage that it begins to resemble Suburban Station at rush hour. If the opening-night audience is any indication, the Society Hill Playhouse has succeeded in attracting "The Rocky Horror Film Show" faddists. It is easy to tell these cultists by their ritualized reactions to the performance. For instance, they hiss the narrator and, much to the dismay of the the theater management, hold up lighted matches when Jane and Brad sing "There's a Light at the Frank 'N Furter Place." "The Rocky Horror Show" will be staged Wednesday through Saturday nights through Dec. 31.

There is no doubt that this opinion sparks from her bonfire performance as a deranged murderess in the violent new movie drama, "A Dream of Passion." Miss Burstyn stars with international stage and screen actress Meli-na Mercouri in the story of a modern day Medea, which was written, directed and produced by Miss Mer-couri's husband, Jules Dassin. In town for the recent premiere of "A Dream of Passion," a flower-fresh Miss Burstyn, her hair now shoulder length and auburn, discussed the role and her ambitions. In the Avco-Embassy release, she plays a young American woman who kills her three children with a butcher knife when her husband deserts her for his Greek mistress. The actress, 45, is aware that she is most closely identified with the title role the bright and bubbly, struggling young widow in "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." The movie-going public will be in for a shock if it expects a repeat.

There is a world of differences between the Alice, which won her the Best Actress Oscar in 1974, and the grim, guilt-crazed Brenda in "A Dream of Passion." She finds it quite understandable that despite important roles in other films, her Alice remains uppermost in the public's memory. "It was the first of its kind," she says of the movie in which she starred with as a director. "The (Hollywood) studios at this time are very open to me directing," Miss Burstyn reported. "It's only a matter of finding the right script." She is very familiar with scripts. She helped develop "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" and is constantly searching for new properties.

At the same time she did "Alice," she felt finding "good roles for yourself was the only way to get them. "Things have changed considerably since then," she said, but her commitment hasn't. And that's why she is involved in unearthing works with the right potential. In making the new film, which is an interesting and complex blend of personalities, she had to fly to Greece. "I consider it the height of economy to make a film where you have always wanted to visit," she Kris Kristofferson for director Martin Scorcese.

It set a precedent for movies from a woman's point of view; Although she has continued stage work (she won the Tony for "Same Time, Next Year" on Broadway), the actress is putting major effort and time into what she sees as the next step in her career, directing. American Film Institute recently screened "Snatchman," the half-hour film she did during participation of the AFI director's workshop. And "3,000 of my contemporaries" were invited, she said. Some of them were critics. "It was a little like playing piano and having your scales reviewed," she quipped.

She was terribly embarrassed, she says, but at the same time, the experience has helped her establish her credentials said. The violent screenplay, which involves a certain eerie, transference of identities, made an early incident in the making of the movie especially ironic. Arriving at Athens to a crowd of the movie's cast led by "Julie and Melina with roses for me," she recalled the surprise when she and Melina showed up an hour later for dinner in identical dresses. Bringing her shoulders up, affecting a husky voiced imitation of Melina, Miss Burstyn repeats with relish, the Greek actress's remark, "Same dress, yes! It is spooky, no?" The actress loved working in Greece. She said she visited the Acropolis and Corinth (where the original Medea murdered her children in the Euripides tragedy) and various amphitheaters.
