Sitophilus oryzae
Adult weevils are about 2 to 3mm long and coloured a dull reddish-brown to black with round or irregularly shaped pits on the thorax and four light reddish or yellowish spots on the elytra.
Sitophilus zeamais looks very similar, but is generally a darker brown.
Examination of the male aedeagas is usually necessary.
Unless identified by a recognised expert, photographic evidence is required and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used. Note the beetle's size and describe the identifying characters. It is advisable to retain the specimen in case further checks are needed.
Usually found in granaries or close to human occupation. It is associated with stored grain, especially rice and wheat.
May be encountered in any month of the year.
The adult female rice weevil lays an average of 4 eggs per day and may live for four to five months (producing 250 to 400 eggs). A single generation can be completed in around 28 days. The eggs hatch in about 3 days. The larvae feed inside the grain kernel for an average of 18 days. The pupal stage lasts an average of 6 days (5 to 16 range). The new adult will remain in the seed for 3 to 4 days while its cuticle hardens and matures.
Widespread in Britain and possibly under recorded.
Although there are few records at present from Leicestershire and Rutland it is possibly under recorded in our area.
