Cincelichthys pearsei & Vieja Synspilum

I have had a read of the guide to sexing chiclids and just wanted to get peoples experience who have kept any of these 2 chiclids on whether they are male or female. The pearsei I have no clue and the Vieja I was leaning towards male but still unsure, would be great to know from others, both fish I have had from 1-2 inch size.

Male pearsei usually have a very square head, and when mature a bit of a nuchal hump.
Of course this depends on age and size.
It's hard to tell just how big the pearsei in the photo is, if its under 10", these trait may not have appeared yet.
The profile of head of the Vieja, suggests male, but how big is it?
If it is male, its not showing the fin trailers males show at maturity as of yet, so again hard to tell.

thanks for they reply. They are both very similar in size roughly 6.5 inch for the vieja and 7 inch for the pearsei. Age wise Im pretty sure they are under a year maybe 10 months but not sure. Il look out for the vieja changes to fin?

The pearsei is too young yet, so trying to guess is a bit premature, my pearsei did't really sport obvious differences until @ 10" to 12", at almost two years old.
That's about the time they begin to think about spawning.

Thank you. Unfortunately the pearsei had to go as it was getting just too large the length wasn’t so bad but the sheer bulk and bio load was too much, really great fish though with brilliant personalities. Iv got a 8 inch green terror now instead who is amazing.

Yep, they are just a massive load on a tank. My old one was 16" and made my 8ft 300 look small. My current one was just acquired this past week at 11" and is putting a big load on its 90 gallon quarantine tank. Another week and I can move it to its permanent 300 gallon home. Sad to hear you had to rehome yours... maybe a bigger tank in your future and another pearsei then...
