I wait until 2 become a compatible pair, and show signs of spawning, then remove all other cichlids to another tank, and allow the pair to do what comes natural.
I usually use a larger tank though, sometimes in a tiny tank, the space is too confining and if so, one of the pair may kill the other.
When my Amatitlanania (of any species) spawned I usually use a 50 or 75 gal, with swordtails as dithers to focus the heightened hormonal aggression outward.
I usually provide a flower pot or PVC as a cave to spawn in
Normally they are great parents and I leave the fry with the parents until the are eating normal flake, and can fend for themselves, then move the fry to grow out tanks. A 10 gal is a good fry rising size tank, until they out grow it.
I also start a couple cultures of Artemia after the eggs are laid
I have found this to work raising many different species of Amatitlania (and their similar cousins)
above A cutteri, below P panamense
below A Honduran Red Point
This is about the size I separate from the parents to separate grow out tanks, and as soon as the fry are separated, the parents will commonly spawn again
Panamense eggs below on a piece of waterlogged wood.
