EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Speargrass, Piptochaetium panicoides, a grass species native to Africa, Australia, and South America. The intricately detailed illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn and directed by C. Vauthier, with engraving by Corsi, and published by Batelli e Figli. Speargrass is also known by several other names, including Oryzopsis setacea, Urachne setosa, Stipa paniculoides, and Orizzosside setacea. This grass is characterized by its tall, slender stems and long, narrow leaves. The inflorescence is a panicle, or a dense, branched cluster of flowers. Speargrass is an important food source for many herbivores and is also used as a vegetable and for making flour. The plant's seeds are also edible and have been used as a substitute for rice in some cultures. Speargrass is also known for its attractive, ornamental value and is often used in landscaping. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the exceptional skill and artistry of French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of the plants he depicted. The use of the copperplate stipple engraving technique adds an additional layer of intricacy and depth to the illustration, making it a true masterpiece of botanical art.
