Longear Sunfish are assumed to be introduced in Maryland, where they are primarily found near the Potomac River. A recent paper splits the taxon into several species, but notes that populations in the upper Ohio River drainage are a mixture of true Longear and Northern Sunfish. Although it wasn’t addressed in the text, they included two Potomac River specimens from WV in their analyses and found them similar to the upper Ohio River fish. (R. Aguilar, pers. comm.) With the small sample size for the Potomac, we are stopping short of calling all of our Longear Sunfish intergrades. For now we are ingesting records of Longear Sunfish and Longear x Northern Sunfish to this page. We'll update according to prevailing wisdom as the story unfolds.
There are 64 records in the project database.
