Characteristics:

Habit

Small tree, 8-10 (15) m tall, 8-10 m wide, broad spreading growth, funnel-shaped, loose crown, picturesquely spreading branches, often multi-stemmed, slow-growing, 30-40 cm a year

Branches and bark

Dark green to grey-purple, smooth, slightly grooved

Blossom

Monoecious, female catkins yellow-brown, male catkins green, clearly smaller, April to May

Leaves

Summer green, reddish shoots, later fresh green, broad-elliptical to oval, pointed, serrated edge, golden yellow in autumn

Fruits

Nutlets between conspicuous bracts, similar to hop hornbeam (Ostria japonica) or hops (Humulus lupulus), up to 7 cm long, pendulous, initially green, from August brown-pink, persistent until after the leaves have fallen

Demands

Full sun, sunny to semi-shady, drought-resistant, likes warmth, usually frost-hardy, wind-resistant, tolerates pruning

Fresh to moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to alkaline, tolerates different soil types
