Plant Profile

Scientific name: Maranta leuconeura

Common name(s): Green Prayer Plant

Family: Marantaceae

Native Range: South America, Brazil

Description & Care:

Marana leuconeura is an evergreen, rhizomatous plant that has somewhat rounded/oval light green leaves with dark splotches.  The leaves close upward at night in a manner resembling praying hands, hence the common name of the prayer plant.  This plant requires warmth and humidity to thrive and prevent browning tips.  It grows best in high humidity and bright indirect to medium light.  You can prune as needed to remove brown or dead leaves and control growth.  This plant is pet friendly!

Light: Bright to medium indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight

Water: Keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering by allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry between waterings.  Can be sensitive to the minerals in hard tap water and cause browning, so filtered water is recommended. If filtered water is not an option, you can try bottom watering or leave tap water out for a few days before watering and avoid getting it on the foliage.

Temperature: 65-80F

Humidity: High

Feeding: Fertilize about once a month during active growth which typically occurs during the spring and summer months

Propagation:  It can be propagated through division/rhizomes or cuttings below the node

Common Pests: Look out for mealy bugs, spider mites, and thrips

Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets, but we recommend you exercise caution around children and pets
