Coffee Plant Germination A coffee plant takes roughly three years to develop from seed germination to producing fruit. The following pictures illustrate the various stages of this process. The coffee seed itself is a fascinating structure. It consists of a hard endosperm containing two embryos, all wrapped in two protective husks: the outer parchment and the inner silver skin. As the hypocotyl axis grows, it pushes the seed upwards, lifting it out of the ground. Around 10 weeks after planting, the parchment splits open, revealing two cotyledons that unfurl into two round, leaf-like structures. At this stage, the root system is still relatively simple, consisting primarily of a taproot with lateral roots beginning to develop. Sicc labs is spearheading a cutting-edge breeding program. We are researching climate-resilient coffee species and potential hybrids that may already exist. Our aim is to develop drought-tolerant, low-intervention coffees. Currently, we are researching Coffea arabica x Coffea liberica var. dewevrei (excelsa coffee) using initial screening, selection, and stability analysis. 

Let's examine the ploidy types and bean shapes of the four species. Arabica, a tetraploid (44 chromosomes), displays an elliptical shape, slightly flattened with a straight groove. Robusta, a diploid (22 chromosomes), exhibits a round, convex, and small shape. Liberica, also diploid (22 chromosomes), showcases an elongated bean shape with a teardrop appearance. Travancorensis, another diploid (22 chromosomes), features small, round beans with a deep central groove (groove not pictured)
