Cornulaca setifera aka Cornulaca tragacanthoides (حاذ) Cornulaca tragacanthoides, commonly known as the camel thorn, is a species of flowering plant in the family Amaranthaceae. It is native to arid regions of Africa and the Middle East. This perennial shrub is adapted to survive in harsh desert conditions and is often found in sandy and rocky habitats. Cornulaca tragacanthoides has small, fleshy leaves and a sprawling growth habit. It produces small, inconspicuous flowers that are usually greenish-yellow in color. The plant is known for its ability to accumulate salts in its tissues, which helps it tolerate high levels of soil salinity. One notable feature of Cornulaca tragacanthoides is its association with desert-dwelling insects, particularly the tamarisk leafhopper (Hishimonoides sellatiformis). The plant provides a habitat and food source for these insects, which in turn aid in pollination and seed dispersal. In traditional medicine, the gum extracted from the stems and branches of Cornulaca tragacanthoides is sometimes used as a thickening agent or emulsifier. It is also known as "tragacanth gum" and has various industrial applications, including in the food, textile, and pharmaceutical industries.
