Shelter to Live. Education to Thrive.
About us
The mission of Our House is to end the cycle of homelessness for families. Our House was established in 1988 by concerned community residents who realized that shelter rules required homeless families to leave early each morning and not return until late in the afternoon. This left families with no where to go during the day, and women with no one to care for their children while they attempted to find work or hold down a job. Since its founding, Our House has strategically addressed homelessness in families using a two-pronged approach: first address affordable, quality childcare as a barrier to self sufficiency and second, provide holistic support to families as they move toward independence.

In the spirit of celebrating mothers this May, you can empower mothers and their children to break the cycle of homelessness by making a gift today or please consider making a monthly, recurring gift. While the issue of family homelessness is often overlooked, data reveals that family homelessness has increased in Atlanta by 75% from 2022 to 2023. A gift of any amount makes a tangible difference, ensuring that families experiencing homelessness have access to the responsive, wraparound support they need on their journey to self-sufficiency. Your support provides mothers and children experiencing homelessness free access to shelter, healthcare, early childhood education, employment training, and comprehensive case management. The network of free and charitable clinics across the US serve people who otherwise couldn’t access care. Maybe they can’t afford medicine, co-pays and deductibles, or there is no clinic open to them, and so they are left behind. This includes people who struggle with chronic diseases, like heart disease, diabetes or mental illness, such as anxiety or depression. And when there’s an emergency – a hurricane, storm or heat wave – survivors rely on community clinics for care. Americares strengthens these frontline clinics – with donations of medicine, training for staff and technical support – so people living with low-incomes can access quality health care right where they live. In Atlanta, Georgia, there’s a small but mighty clinic called Our House, Inc. And a very special patient, Miss Vickie. #Americares.

Food insecurity, defined by the Atlanta Community Food Bank, is a measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. 🌽 This impacts students' concentration in school, exacerbates health concerns for families, and strains socioeconomic progress. That's why it is important at Our House for us to address this important issue many of our families face. Through our Early Childhood Education program, children receive three nutritious meals and snacks daily 🍎. Families in our shelter also benefit from breakfast and dinner services, thanks to the dedication of our volunteers. Thank you to all of our volunteers and community partners for your support in keeping our children and parents fed daily. 🥗 #endhunger #endhomelessness
