Nanday Parakeet

Aratinga nenday

The Nanday Parakeet is also known as the Black-hooded Parakeet or Nanday Conure. The bird is native to South America from southeast Bolivia to southwest Brazil, central Paraguay and northern Argentina, from the region known as the pantanal.
Nanday Parakeet Nanday Parakeets are not native to Florida but they have boomed in population at Celery Fields in Sarasota. There are literally dozens of them perching in the trees and on the telephone lines. They make a racket and seem totally unconcerned with humans. Nanday Parakeets usually find holes in trees to nest in. It lays 3-4 eggs. After raising its young, all birds will form rather large communal roosts until the next breeding season.
Wild Nanday Parakeets visiting the lodge in the Pantanal I am thrilled to be able to add the first uncaged Nanday Parakeets. These look pretty civilized given the bricks in the background - but they were wild and came to a feeding table at one of our Pantanal lodges. For great birdwatching in the Pantanal, often you don't even have to leave your lodge! Brazil,Geotagged,Nanday Parakeet,Nandayus nenday,Pantanal,Winter

Food

The bird feeds on seeds, fruit, palm nuts, berries, flowers and buds. Feral birds will also come to bird feeders. Wild birds primarily use scrub forest and forest clearings around settlements. It frequents open savannah, pastures and stockyards in South America where it is considered a pest in some areas.
