The Scene Vault: Cliff Champion, James Hylton and Richard Childress

By Rick Houston

Cliff Champion has been to a lot of places and seen a lot of things during his career in NASCAR, and it all started in the humblest of beginnings with rough-and-tumble independent drivers James Hylton and Richard Childress.

With Hylton and Childress, there was no such thing as a 40-hour work week. Champion and the rest of whatever crew the teams were able to cobble together did whatever it took to get on down the road to the next race. Admittedly young and dumb, Champion didn’t know any other way to operate.

With such similar backgrounds in the sport, Childress and Hylton developed a close friendship. And practical jokes? Oh, yeah. There were plenty of those.

This is Cliff Champion’s story.
