CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY TODAY...GIANNA NANNINI

Italian rock singer Gianna Nannini was born 69 years ago in Siena, region of Tuscany and has a daughter.

As a child/youth, she went to a scientific secondary school, took piano lessons and even worked in her family’s pastry shop.  When she was 18, Gianna competed in a music festival, placing fourth.  The following year, she moved to Milan as she wished to commence a music career and studied song composition.  In addition, Gianna started performing in different venues.

After introducing herself to several record companies, she joined a band, composed and recorded some tracks with them, plus participating in a music festival.  Then in 1976, she proceeded as a solo artist and her first album was released, followed by a second one a year later.

Real success arrived in 1979 with the song ‘America’ which featured in her third album and also led her to the European market.  In the summer of 1981, she participated in the Festivalbar with the track ‘Vieni Ragazzo’ and managed to place 2nd.

During the 80s, Gianna released 7 albums, including a collection and a live one.  She had a string of hits, both in her native Italy and various European countries.  These include the Italian number one hit ‘Fotoromanza’, the Italian number two hits ‘Bello e Impossibile’ and ‘I Maschi’ and ‘Hey Bionda’.  In 1989, for the event of the World Cup which was being held in her native Italy, Gianna recorded and sang in duet the official track ‘Un’Estate Italiana’, (also known as ‘Notte Magiche’), together with singer Edoardo Bennato.

In the last 3 decades, Nannini had 20 more albums, including an album of cover versions of popular hits such as ‘Il Cielo in una Stanza’, ‘Lontano dagl’Occhi’ and ‘C’e’ chi dice no’, amongst others.  She embarked on several tours, both locally and internationally, as well as participated in numerous concerts and shows, including those for charity purposes.  Gianna also published 4 books and won a Lunezia Rock D’Autore Award, amongst others.

At the age of 40, Gianna got a degree in philosophy whilst at 56 years old she gave birth to her daughter Penelope.
