James Boyce is a Toronto-based photographer.

James has always been drawn to the visual arts – sketching, drawing, painting – and was encouraged by friends and family throughout his life to pursue an artistic career, but instead entered the service industry as a teenager and remained there for over two decades.

In 2017, looking for a new creative outlet, James bought a camera and began documenting the streets of Vancouver. In 2020, at the age of 44, he left the service industry to become a professional photographer, and in 2023 moved to Toronto.

James has always been fascinated by the imagined stories of the people behind the scenes of daily life. Who lives there? What is their life like? What are they thinking? He explores and documents these stories through portraiture and street photography.

James graduated from the Professional Photography program at the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts in 2022. When not wandering the street with his camera, he is often in front of the TV cheering on the Canucks, Blue Jays, Broncos, or Raptors. He loves coffee, heavy metal, and good denim.

Artist Note

It is not too late, and you are not too old. I hope, through my work, to make myself proud and inspire others to have the courage to change.
