It didn’t take long for him to cop on to the fact that a glittering CV from his playing days was not a free pass to getting a top job as a manager.

Four trophies with Chelsea, an impressive 54 goals in 187 Premier League games (1997-2004) and stints as coach with Swindon Town, Leeds United and Tottenham should have put Gus Poyet in the frame for managerial positions, but the phone didn’t ring.
