"Sincerely/Anthony Bate". B/w, 3½x5½. His ALS on verso: "Thank
you so much for your kind and interesting letter. Sorry we didn't come your way
with 'Eden End' which - sadly - closes, tonight. Still, let us hope - another
play, another time! Best wishes. AB". English actor Anthony Bate
(1927-2012) may be best remembered for his role as Oliver Lacon in the
BBC production of John LeCarré's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1978) and
Smiley's People (1981). Lacon made his West End stage debut in 1960.
Eden End, just ending when Bate signed this letter, toured England in
1972. Bate's feature film credits include Give My Regards to Broad Street
(1982) and Nowhere in Africa (2003). A frequent presence on British TV,
he has portrayed well known fictional characters like MacDuff and Inspector
Javert, and real ones like T. H. Huxley, Victor Hugo and Kim Philby. Edges
lightly toned. Fine condition.
