The world's rarest species of gentian is Schenkia [formerly Centaurium] sebaeoides, native to the Hawaiian Islands, where it is known locally as the awiwi. Endemic to low shrublands and subject to dramatic population fluctuations, this white-flowered coastal species is threatened by habitat loss, and is the only member of the gentian family ranked as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.
