Orson Whitlock is Orson the Great a 12 year old who is also one of the world's top magicians.
The story opens with 12 year old Orson and his assistant Agatha finishing up a performance. An ominous feeling hangs over the story as Orson is being followed and then threatened by another magician, Daxton the Destroyer.

Daxton vows to beat Orson in a magic competition and become the new leader of the Magicians Guild.

The story then jumps back ten years to when Orson was 10 and how he became the greatest magician in the world.

The magic scenes in the story were so well portrayed, I could picture it all. Orson is a likeable and relatable protagonist. He always wants to please. Agatha, Orson's assistant and manager, is another wonderful character, a very worldly wise 12 year old.

The story is rich in tension, danger, suspense and (of course) magic. Orson the Great has all the right ingredients to keep middle grade readers enthralled. It may even get them interested in trying a few magic tricks of their own!

Do you believe in magic!?

Incredibly surprising book. This book was absolutely delightful! It filled my heart with so much joy, and I just could not put it down. I am still sitting here with my mouth open from the ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had a unique way of presentation in the first person storytelling — which is my favorite.

The development of characters was outstanding and it kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole book.

I recommend strongly that you should get this book. It deserves to made into a movie.

Orson the Great

Orson the Great was well… great! I throughly enjoyed reading this book. Orson, a budding magician, was a wonderful character and I couldn’t wait to see how he would find his full potential. I love stories about magicians and I’m never quite sure what is a sleight of hand or truly magic! As Orson’s father reminds us, “There are two types of people, those who believe in magic and those who don’t!” I am a believer and that is what makes this book such a fun one for me! The story is full of mystery, magic, twists and turns as Orson practices his craft. But it is also a heartwarming story about a family supporting our young hero as he finds his way. Orson is surrounded by people who love him including his parents, grandparents and uncle. Even his extended family is remembered warmly. Much of the action occurs around the Christmas holiday and describes how the family spends that time together enjoying favorite holiday foods, songs, visits to church and Christmas trees with twinkling lights. Orson expresses such fondness for all his family and he truly feels loved and supported. Not only did I enjoy reading the book but I think it would be a lovely book to read aloud to children and honestly I can’t think of anything inappropriate for a young child in the pages!

Thank you to the author Colm Mcelwain for such a great read. I hope that perhaps we might have another book on Orson? Would also love to see how his friendship withhis assistant Agatha progresses! I received this advanced reader copy for free and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you @lovebookstours for the copy of Orson the Great by Colm McElwain. This is a lovely middle grades book for children aged 9-12. Adults and children alike will fall in love with Orson and his magic. I loved the magic tricks and the sense of magical realism. It has a sense of mystery with Orson’s family and the Grand master of magic, combined with a little it of vile and competition between Orson and Dexter the Destroyer. This book is perfect for any child who has tried to perform a magic trick for their family. It brings out a sense of magic in all of us.

This is a fun read for children 9-13, I'd say. Orson is a young lad whose dad introduces him to the world of magic, and he becomes a child star.
The rivalry between Orson and Daxton gets quite dark, and at times, the language became quite grown up, and I had to remind myself that Orson was meant to be a child.
I liked the relationship with Agatha. It was sweet and funny.
It's got a really great pace to it, I sat down one evening and read 150 pages in one sitting.
I do wonder what will be next for Orson and would be intrigued to see if the author continues this into a series, as there were definitely seeds sown that could be explored.
It's a really good read. I'm sure it will do well.

This was a great magical YA story. The journey of Orson the great was lovely to read. I’m a great believer in magic and that just because you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist!
What a life Orson had! To be a magician of such talent at such a young age must have been amazing but also scary when others are jealous or want to take that acclaim from you.
The support he receives from his family and others helped build this magical genius and the magic tricks seemed to come alive, I could see them in my head as Orson performed them for the masses.
I’m very glad I took the chance on an unknown to me author, I thoroughly enjoyed this and I think adults, with magic in their hearts, and children alike will love this book.

Orson Whitlock was ten-year-old when his father gave him a deck of cards on Christmas Eve 1972. The magic starts from here with Orson, spending time at Christmas was only the beginning of things. Little does he know this is the start of something big. Orson and his assistance Agatha Anderson just finished a performance, when Daxton the Destroyer tell him he's not as good as he is, he was going to win the competition. Daxton starts to follow Orson and Agatha around, watching him and Daxton will do anything he can to stop Orson winning and becoming the Grand Master. Orson known he has to learn as much as he can and Agatha is by his side to help him, and they both know that it will be devastating if Daxton wins. Orson discovers a family secret, Orson's father and Grandpa were the best magician when they were younger. This is a easy read, that will appeal to young readers.

Colm McElwain's Orson the Great is a gripping and fascinating novel that is aimed at younger readers who love stories about magic shows and tricks.

This novel tells of a young and extremely talented magician called Orson Whitlock, who has to face a brilliant, but psychopathic and feared magician called Daxton the Destroyer. Daxton challenges Orson to a contest that will decide who is the next Grand Master. Daxton is determined to beat Orson and is willing to do anything to achieve his goal. Orson teams up with his assistant Agatha Anderson and prepares to confront his formidable opponent...

I enjoyed this novel a lot, because it's a charming story that goes full speed ahead and offers its reader a break from reality. What I like perhaps most about the story is that it is genuinely and unapologetically entertaining in every regard, because it has been aimed at readers who are looking for fun escapism. The author clearly aims to entertain his readers and he fully succeeds in it.

I find Orson an interesting protagonist, because he is a boy whose life suddenly changes and he finds himself competing against an older and talented magician. I think that many readers will find it easy to relate to him, because he does his best to deal with a difficult and challenging situation.

Orson's enthusiasm and passion towards magic is brought vividly to life in the story. As the events unfold, the author reveals how Orson becomes intrigued about magic, how he learns more about it and how he deals with the pressure of knowing that if he loses to Daxton, the results will be drastic and devastating for the magic world. The events leading up to him finding about his legacy are fluently written and sparkle with nostalgia and warmth, but a touch of darkness can also be found in the background as there are secrets which haven't been revealed to Orson yet.

The author writes simple and easy-to-read prose that fits the story. His prose is perfect for younger readers, because he uses simple expressions and avoids complex sentences that might confuse readers who are not used to reading adult prose.

I believe that Orson the Great is a novel that has the power to mesmerise younger readers and inspire them to search for more similar kind of stories, because it has all the necessary ingredients to fascinate its target audience and make them crave for more. The author combines elements of wonder, awe, adventure and magic shows in such a wonderful way that it will charm readers (the scenes featuring magic tricks and shows are especially well written and entertaining). He also manages to surprise his readers with a few unexpected twists that spice up the story.

Before I write the final words of this review, I want to mention that I think it's great that the author touches upon the importance of education in this novel, because it is not often handled or even mentioned in this kind of fiction.

Colm McElwain's Orson the Great is an entertaining and easily likeable novel that can be enjoyed by younger and older readers alike, because it will captivate both readerships by its story. It's charming and exciting escapism for those who want to take a break from reality and lose themselves in a good story.

I received an advance reading copy of this book for review. I'd probably rate it a 4.5, but there are no halfs for reviews.

Orson the Great by Colm McElwain delves into the history of magic through the life of Orson Whitlock as Orson discovers the world of magic and family tradition. Without spoiling too much, Orson must hone his skills and become the best magician or the fate of the magic world is at risk. It’s a lot of pressure for a young man, but he has the support of his family and trusty sidekick Agatha to keep him on the right path as he faces Daxton the Destroyer and conspiracies in the fight for magic.

The story is simply written with a good amount of fun details and magical background that will appeal to readers who enjoy young adult fiction. McElwain brings the magic into Orson the Great without actually spoiling the tricks of the trade and keeping the magic real. At some points, you can visualize the magic shows being performed and I often found myself wondering just how the trick is accomplished.

My only complaint would be that the transitions from the present day to the past and back were not always smooth and could be a little hard to follow. However, the story is still enjoyable and has a few unexpected twists that leave you wondering just what is going to happen next.

As a cosplayer, the characters' outfits were described very clearly and I really enjoyed picturing the possible costumes from Orson’s magician attire complete with white gloves and a cape to Agatha’s shiny white assistant’s dress that gets covered in fake blood.

As a teacher, I can see myself including this book on a shelf for students to read for fun. Especially middle school and younger high school ages who are going through a lot of change in their lives. It’s always good when students can find a way to relate to characters in a book and though the challenges and changes Orson is facing are not quite what students may be facing, his determination, nervousness, and other emotions are completely relatable. Most want to make their families proud and succeed and Orson is no different.

As asked many times in the story, do you believe? If so, give this fun story a chance. It is available on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Orson-Great-Co...

"Orson the Great" by Colm McElwain takes readers on a captivating journey into the world of magic and mystery. From the very beginning, young Orson Whitlock's fascination with magic ignites a spark within him that propels him to the heights of his profession.

The author expertly weaves together elements of intrigue and family secrets, transforming Orson's blissful life into a thrilling adventure. The discovery of a long-held family secret plunges Orson into a world filled with secret societies and deception, where strange disappearances and unrest become the norm.

But the momentum doesn't stop there. McElwain introduces a brilliant and feared magician named 'Daxton the Destroyer', who challenges Orson to a contest that could jeopardize everything he has worked for. With the help of his trusty assistant, Agatha Anderson, Orson must face his most formidable opponent yet, testing his skills and risking everything he holds dear.

The story is filled with suspense and keeps readers on the edge of their seats. McElwain's writing is engaging and vivid, painting a picture of Orson's world in the mind of the reader. The characters are well-developed, and their motivations and struggles are highlighted with depth and authenticity.

"Orson the Great" is a delightful adventure that will appeal not only to magic enthusiasts but to anyone who enjoys a thrilling and heartwarming story. McElwain's storytelling prowess shines through in this tale of determination, discovery, and the power of holding onto what we cherish the most.

This was such a great YA read that packed some great storylines into the perfect sized book for this age group.

When Orson Whitlock is given a deck of cards for Christmas when he was 10 years old, he fell in love with magic.
After 2 years of hard work, Orson The Great is performing at the top of his game. But rival Daxton The Destroyer wants to challenge Orson for the title of grand master.
Whilst preparing for his upcoming battle, Orson discovers a family secret that sends him into a world of adventure, secrecy of deception.

Orson was a great character and would definitely appeal to our target audience.
I loved his dedication to learning and performing his magic and also to stick with it through his trauma too and be so determined to win.
The introduction of the deception and the darkness of Daxton adds that extra excitement to the storylines which weave together perfectly throughout.

I'm not sure that I've read many books that involve performance magic and it was really great to see some of the show scenes described so brilliantly.

The writing style was fast-paced and exciting and I loved that the chapters were all nice and short - this gave lots of opportunity for the younger readers to pick this up and read a couple of chapters at once, at bedtime or after school.
I also loved that each chapter had its own title which gave you a little clue as to what the chapter would be about.

I really enjoyed this read and hope and wonder whether we might see more from Orson in the future?

I received an advance reading copy of this book for review. I'd rate it a solid 4, and I definitely did enjoy it. This book is about a magician learning his craft in a high stress situation. While many of us crumble under pressure, the main character has a decent support system in place and he is able to learn and grow as the book progresses. I really enjoyed the character development from start to finish, though I don't want to say a lot more on that as I don't want to spoil the plot!

The author of this book does a good job of including enough description and information that you can fall into the story and travel along with the main character as he faces his magical tasks. I found it to be engaging and would definitely be willing to read the story again.

I am not usually a big fan of stories that have time jumps in them, as I tend to find those confusing or distracting, but I think the author handled the time jumps relatively well. I would, perhaps, have tried to ease the transitions between time some to make it more clear but I can acknowledge some of that may be my own personal preferences.

Without further ado though, I would say it was an enjoyable read for me as an adult reader and I think it would be even more so for a young adult reader who enjoys delving into the mystical and fantastic.

I want to start off by saying that I had no idea what I was going to get myself into reading this book. The cover alone is what had my eye. I am so glad that I did end up reading this book. I fell in love with this the story and the characters that author created. I do plan on reading more books from this author. I know that is a short story. But I didn’t want this book and the adventures to end. I have never been to a magic show or a circus. But reading this I felty like I was there watching Orson and Daxton performing right before me. I also really enjoyed the family dynamic. Like a little movie. I am sorry my review is all over the place. I just couldn’t believe how much I really enjoy a good and fun book such as this book gave me.
Tony be honest that ending throw me out there. I had no idea or thoughts this was how it was going to end. I am happy for everyone in the end. I do highly recommend this book. Yes it’s a middle grade. But reading it made me feel young and adventurous again.
Orson and Agatha are so super cute. I really have no bad things to say about this book.
Thank you to he author and lovebooktours for this amazing opportunity. To read a book to make me feel young and couldn’t put this book down.

It wasn't too bad, but definitely not for me.

Sometimes it was too descriptive, sometimes it was the complete opposite. It was more of a plot-driven book and I didn't really think it mattered if there was someone else as the main character, simply because there isn't any character voice. It was unrealistic when Orson didn't really feel shocked with so much new secrets in his life and had not thought about the mysteries. I think it sounded like a draft two, and need more revising. The author also didn't do a well job with putting his mind in the scene, and seeing things though the main character, Orson's, point of view.

I really think the author worked hard, and he did a good job on entertaining me for the most part. It's imaginative but not too original.

All in all, this was okay, I just couldn't look past the writing, which probably needs more work on. I hope the author continues to improve and I wish him luck on his journey.

Thank you Book Sirens for providing me with an ARC in response for a honest review!

Life isn't all what it seems, even though you've lived through it. It isn't what you're led to believe it is. Orson's life is based on a lie. He's "coming of age" and all he thought he knew is turned on its head as he learns his home/family life has secrets to be revealed.

Interestingly, for a middle-grade book, this is set in the 1970's and I reckon children will find this fascinating, especially with how the plot shapes up, into quite the adventure into the world of magicians and magic.
It all started with a present one Christmas that piqued his interest and he turned it into a career of a lifetime as he becomes a magician. It isn't an easy ride as there are formidable opponents for the most sought after titles to contend with.

The book has its moments of grip and page-turning qualities as Orson's eyes are opened up to secret societies and the fact that not all is at peace as something odd is happening.

It's great for confident readers who like something mysterious and a bit of trepidation with magicians.

Thank you to Booksirens and the author, for giving Me a copy of this book for my honest review.

The book is about Orson Whitlock, a boy of 10 years, who falls in love with magic. It turns out his dad and grandpa were the best magician in their day.

This causes Orson to hone his skills and develop his magic so he can keep his family heritage as great magicians. He has determination, while nervous he has an assistant Agatha Anderson who provides support and help. However, he has a loving family who also support him.

He learns he must beat Daxton, the Destroyer, to be the greatest. The story has interesting twist and turns that keep you going.

I think young adults would like it. Do you believe in magic? If so, this book is for you.

This is an enjoyable read that I am sure middle grade children will love, however, I will say that it is definitely geared towards the older end of middle grade through the language and content at times.

The book is well written with a compelling story line and well developed characters some of which I loved. I really like Orson and Agatha. I also loved seeing the 2 sides of Orson's magic, the dark side where he is trying to take over as the new leader of the Magicians Guild - an organisation that has always fascinated me - and the light where he is a young boy who becomes a child star.

The book just flowed so well and the pacing works really well too and would really help to keep middle grade readers attention. The book is also full of atmosphere, tension and danger which will definitely keep them engaged. Then of course there is the magic and who doesn't love a bit of magic.

In Orson the Great, we follow Orson Whitlock, a young and incredibly talented magician who has to face a brilliant but unhinged and feared magician called Daxton the Destroyer.
To decide who is the next Grand Master, Daxton challenges Orson to a magic contest. What follows is Orson’s preparation and finally, the contest.
For me, this novel is just a really nice read. I read it with our three Daughters who thought it was wonderful. The magic scenes were so well portrayed as to make it easy to picture everything happening.
It’s a fun book, but also a book rich in tension, suspense and a little danger.
The characters are great, some nice, some not so nice and the pacing of the story was just right.

We ready this in two sittings.

5 stars from us.

Orson the Great is a wonderful children’s book about a budding young magician called Orson Whitlock.
Love to finding out he’s from the whole generation of ‘Grand Masters’ awesome way, no time in hone in his own skills - just in time as he is challenged to a contest by Daxton the Destroyer a fellow magician who seeks ‘The Grand Master’ title.
The story is full of Magic mystery and twists and turns that are simple enough for children to follow yet engaging as an adult if you’re reading along with them.
I love the family feel of the story the bond Orson has with his whole family. I loved Grandad Whitlock he had me laughing with his quick witty lines.
Thank you so much for my copy. I can’t wait to read this with my little one once they are old enough.

This is a fantastic joy filled book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Orson the Great is aimed for ages 9-12, now I'm just a tad bit older than that 😉 & loved it so this is definitely a book to read as family as everyone will fall in love with Orson and his magic.

This is a written book that flows so smoothly, I found myself flying through it. The mixture between magic tricks, magical realism, mystery, suspense & the darker themes & danger that comes with Orson and Daxton's rivalry makes this such an exciting and interesting read. The Characters are well developed & I particularly loved the relationship between Orson & his assistant Agatha.

A gorgeous read I would definitely recommend, this will help you find the magic we all have inside no matter our age.

This is a fantastic story for 9-12 year olds (although I'm much older than that and I thoroughly enjoyed it)

I have a son who has loved magic since he was a small child. He started with "close your eyes while I make this dissappear" but with age and practise is now really rather good at sleight of hand. (I am probably biased, but other people always seem impressed too). Like Orson he also owns an impressive amount of packs of cards.

Orson the Great has the perfect blend of magic and just a hint of danger from the mysterious 'Daxton The Destroyer'. It's full of secrets and mystery that will keep your child turning page after page. Not so great if they're meant to be sleeping!

Take it from a real, professional magician.... this book is pure magic!

I had the opportunity to read an early copy of this book and it was simply magical. Colm really delves into the secret & well guarded world of illusion and pulls back the curtain so to speak. Any Adult or Child with an interest in magic will not be able to put this book down. A joy to read with twists & turns in every chapter! When you've finished reading it, like any good magic trick, you'll want to read it again to see what you missed the first time!

Bravo! 5 Stars.

Loved reading this book. A warm family festive vibe to it. The magic trickery interweaving through the story is great. Sharp, witty natural dialogue the whole way through. Fascinating characters. A few twists and turns. Very easy to visualise the whole story unfolding. Well pitched for a young audience. Really good. Highly recommend it.

I loved this children's story about magic and mystery. It is a coming of age story where Orson's life changing dramatically when he finds out the family secret. He goes through all of the emotions you would go through when you find out that your family life has been a 'lie'. I felt like I went on the adventure with him and his assistant as he learns to control his new found power and the mystery behind it. I felt all of his emotions and this is definitely a book which I will be sharing with my younger family members when they are older. I can not wait to see where Orson's story goes in the future and how he develops as a magician and a person.

Orson the Great was a delightful little book!
Orson as a character was great! He’s likeable and confident and really loves magic! His family are incredibly supportive and fantastic side characters. I loved no-nonsense Agatha, his assistant. I think she was a great counterpart to Orson.
The storyline was great and the absolute twist at the end rally made the book!
I think kids who love magic and want to believe in magic will absolutely fall in love with Orson The Great!

Although Orson The Great is classed as children’s fiction I found this to be a great read and would be suitable for all ages. The story is very fast-paced from the start and I found myself reading chapter after chapter with ease, firstly because of the great characters and secondly because the story was just so interesting.

Orson is a young boy who has discovered his family is part of a line of magicians. Due to his father's illness, Orson begins to learn magic at a quick pace so he can take over as head of the magic community. During his training, he learns of Daxton The Destroyer, who seeks to lead the magic community. To stop him, not only must Orson learn magic, but he must also compete in an event against Daxton for the right to lead.

A great coming-of-age story but not everything is as it seems.

TITLE: Orson the Great
AUTHOR: Colm McElwain
Star Rating: 5

‘A suspense-filled magical bonanza led by a charismatic, young protagonist.’ The Wishing Shelf

REVIEW
I must say, I very much enjoyed this magical novel from the pen of Colm McElwain. Written for 9 to 12 year olds, it's the story of Orson Whitlock, a famed magician, who is challenged to a contest by Daxton the Destroyer. The story has a strong family feel to it, and with its Christmas theme, it would be the perfect stocking filler for young readers.
There are many aspects of this novel I particularly enjoyed. Firstly, the magic is AMAZING; and it's often so well-written, it's difficult to work out whether it's simply a trick - or, indeed, magic! I loved that element of mystery, and I think readers will too. Secondly, I enjoyed the cosy feel to the story, the family moments, the support he gets from his assistant, Agatha. It all adds up to a novel that's not going to offend anybody; the sort of book grandmothers buy grandchildren knowing that, yes, it’s full of suspense, but, no, it's not full of horribleness. Thirdly, the author's a deft hand at speech, using it to develop his characters and, also, the plot.
All in all, I'm very happy to recommend this book to middle grade readers looking for a suspense-filled, ‘feel good’ story. They’ll love the mystery surrounding the first chapter, and the exciting ending where Orson is battling for the crown of magic. I would particularly recommend it to reluctant boy readers; I think they’ll relate to the protagonist and, of course, the magic!

Readers’ Comments
“This is a fun book if you like magic! It’s the story of a boy who’s excellent at magic tricks, but can he confront and win over his nemesis and be the best EVER? I liked the pacing, and I loved the characters, particularly Orson. I think 12 year olds and older would enjoy it the most.” Boy, aged 12
“I enjoyed the magic tricks and trying to work out how they worked. I think this is a good drama with lots of twists I didn’t see coming, This is a good Christmas story.” Girl, aged 12
“The family support Orson gets is the best part of the story. I felt this book was very sweet with a warm, cosy feel to it. It’s not a BIG adventure and nothing MEGA-bad happens. It’s just very cute.” Girl, aged 12
“Smartly plotted, accessible to middle grade readers – although the cover looks as if it’s for older readers. The protagonist is relatable, and the pacing is strong and consistent. My 11 year old girl enjoyed it.” Mother, aged 41

To Sum It Up:
‘A smartly plotted, accessible, middle grade novel packed full of twists, turns – and magic! A FINALIST and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
