Oscar Experts predict Hoyte van Hoytema (‘Oppenheimer’) will win Best Cinematography

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Cinematography at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Hoyte van Hoytema (“Oppenheimer“). The other four Academy Award nominees are Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”), Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”) and Edward Lachman (“El Conde”).

As of this writing, a leading 26 out of our 27 Oscar Experts predict a victory for “Oppenheimer”: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Erik Davis (Fandango), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Kevin Polowy (CBR), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Michael Musto (Queerty), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Scott Mantz (KTLA-TV), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV).

This marks van Hoytema’s second career Academy Award nomination after his cinematography work on another Christopher Nolan film, “Dunkirk” (2017). Already this awards season, the artisan has prevailed with the American Society of Cinematographers, BAFTA, Critics Choice and our own Gold Derby Awards. “Oppenheimer” leads all other movies at the 2024 Oscars with a whopping 13 bids.

The remaining Oscarologist — Claudia Puig (KPCC) — instead believes “Killers of the Flower Moon” will prevail. Prieto is a four-time Oscar nominee for his work on “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), “Silence” (2016), “The Irishman” (2019) and now “Killers of the Flower Moon” (2023). He has yet to win over academy voters … could this be his year?

Currently at Gold Derby, none of the Experts are predicting a win for the other three Best Cinematography nominees: “Poor Things,” “Maestro” and “El Conde.” However, many of our awards pundits will continue to update their Oscar predictions between now and Sunday night, so keep checking back.
