WALES — Todd Hansen, two-time state champion girls high school basketball coach, has resigned from Kettle Moraine High School following an apparent arrest in a prostitution sting in Brookfield last month.

The Freeman left several messages by phone, text and via social media with Hansen on Thursday; none were returned by press time.

A letter was sent to the families by the district this week, saying, "We wanted to inform you that, due to personal reasons, Coach Todd Hansen has tendered his resignation as girls basketball coach and educational support staff member at Kettle Moraine High School.

"Coach Hansen solidified KM girls basketball as one of the premier programs in the state, with back-to-back state championships. These athletic successes will have a lasting impact on the program.

“We are currently meeting with our high school coaching staff, the KM Girls Basketball Youth Club board members, and high school players, as we actively search for our next girls basketball head coach.

“Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this transition.”

Kettle Moraine Athletic Director Ryan Tomczyk said Hansen resigned from his coaching and teaching position on Monday due to “personal reasons.”

Tomczyk met with the girls’ basketball team Tuesday to let them know of Hansen’s decision, and an email was sent to families inside the program on Wednesday.

“I was surprised by it,” Tomczyk said. “It’s unfortunate.”

Kettle Moraine coach Todd Hansen claps along with his bench players during a WIAA Division 1 state semifinal girls basketball game March 10 at the Resch Center.

Sara Otto, director of public information for the Kettle Moraine School District, when asked whether the matter related to a prostitution arrest, said “that is very unfortunate if that is what you are hearing. We’re not commenting on that. We wish him the very best moving forward.”

According to a report released by Brookfield police Thursday, Hansen was arrested at an unnamed hotel on March 28 after arriving there following an arrangement to meet someone for a sexual encounter arranged over a website known to be used by prostitutes to advertise their services. The incident report lists Hansen’s employer as the Kettle Moraine School District. It gives his date of birth as Dec. 3, 1967; Hansen’s Facebook page, with the profile picture being a photo of the gold ball 2023 state champion trophy, also listed his birthday as Dec. 3 on Thursday. The phone number for Hansen in the exchange with police provided with the report matches a number known to be connected to him.

The report said a female Brookfield police officer and several others from Brookfield and Waukesha set up a “prostitution operation” at an unnamed Brookfield hotel on March 28, posting a photo of the female officer that didn’t use her face.

Hansen allegedly responded to the ad, asking about prices. He allegedly asked about “deep French kissing,” whether the woman would require a condom, and asked for a photo of the woman, who used the name “Crystal.” When she asked for a name so she would know who was knocking at the hotel room door, he told her it was “Dan,” the report said.

Arriving at the hotel at about 2 p.m. March 28, the report said Hansen told the woman he was nervous after seeing a police officer in the lobby. “Well they aren’t here for me,” the woman replied.

“Make me nervous to come up,” Hansen said in a text exchange provided with the police report.

“Just come on up don’t act weird,” the woman replied. “You’re not a cop?” came the question from Hansen’s phone.

“No not the law I promise,” was the reply. Police officers were reported as positioned throughout the hotel and in a bathroom of the hotel room when Hansen arrived. When he got to the designated room, after small talk about seeing the police, Hansen removed a shoe and presented money he’d kept in a sock, the report said.

“After seeing the money and being unsure if he was going to start undressing, I indicated to the arrest team to enter from the bathroom to arrest Hansen,” the report said.

Hansen was taken to the Brookfield Police Department where he was booked and cited for a municipal violation of Brookfield’s prostitution ordinance, and given a citation with a bond amount of $2,581 and a non-mandatory court date of April 24 and was released, the report said.

Hansen was hired as the Lasers’ coach in July 2018, and also worked as a teacher’s aide at the school. Hansen led the Lasers to back-to-back state championships in girls basketball, the second of which came March 11 with a victory over Brookfield East. During his five-year stint at Kettle Moraine, Hansen has led the Lasers to the four regional titles and the sectional finals three times, including two sectional titles. Prior to that, the Pewaukee resident guided the Pewaukee High School Pirates to five conference titles and five regional championships. He was twice named the All-Freeman Girls Basketball Coach of the Year, including this year.

Tomczyk said the job opening will be posted next week and will remain open for two weeks.

“We’ll be fine in the end,” Tomczyk said. “We’ll have a lot of good candidates.”

Hansen is the second Kettle Moraine basketball coach to leave his position within days of taking his team to the state tournament berth this year. Trevon Hughes, boys basketball coach at KM for the past two years, and the district mutually parted ways within days of its first WIAA tournament appearance after KM bowed out in the semifinals March 17. By April 6, Hughes announced on social media that KM “had made a decision to move in a different direction ... something I had not anticipated.”

Otto said the district is “actively recruiting for both positions.” She gave no further information about the circumstances of Hughes’ departure other than to say “we wish him all the best” in the future.
