The high-backed and relatively narrow in cross-section Nanus Cory with a strikingly flat dorsal line is called by its scientific species name Corydoras nanus, from the Latin word nanus for dwarf. This handsome, peaceful and sociable cory is quite similar to Corydoras napoensis and Corydoras elegans. Corydoras nanus comes from Surinam, South America. In the wild it lives in low flow areas under wood or in foliage accumulations, often in the same areas as Corydoras punctatus.
The small gregarious Nanus Corydoras has a silvery to rose gold body base color and three black to dark brown, slightly irregular longitudinal stripes, one above the lateral line, one below the lateral line, and one along the lateral line. The fins are translucent and have a faint dark brown stripe pattern in places. The barbels around the mouth tend to be slightly longer.
Male Corydoras nanus are slightly more slender than the fatter female Nanus Corydoras. Nanus Corydoras grow to a length of 5-6 cm. Like all species of the genus Corydoras, the rather shy Corydoras nanus needs a sufficiently large shoal of conspecifics to feel comfortable, the group size should be at least 6-10 animals.
An aquarium with an edge length of at least 80 cm is very suitable for the care of such a group of small Corys. Wood, caves or some foliage at the bottom of the aquarium as a hiding place should be present as well as a sand zone or fine rounded gravel for the corys to burrow.
The Nano Cory tends to live in the lower water layers of the aquarium, but as an intestinal breather it needs unhindered access to the water surface at all times. A planting in the aquarium is left absolutely in peace, also beautifully planted aquariums are no problem, it should be thought only of the free sand zone.
As a substrate spawner, the Nanus Corydoras attaches its eggs to surfaces with a good flow around them - to the aquarium glass, to plants or to the aquarium furnishings. After 3-5 days the small larvae of the Nanus Cory Catfish hatch. For hatching and rearing, it is best to transfer the eggs to a separate rearing tank with sand and some plants for best results. The larvae of Corydoras nanus are raised with Artemia nauplii.
The Nanus Corydoras reaches an age of 10 years in the aquarium with good care. At an aquarium temperature of 23-25 °C, clean water rich in humic substances and a soft to medium water hardness of up to 12 GH and a pH between 6 and 7.5, the conditions for the peaceful and very social Nanus Corydoras are optimal.
Corydoras nanus are also suitable for beginners, they are adaptable and quite robust. Nanus Cory are also good candidates for a community tank with suitable additional stock: peaceful small to medium sized characins or danios and also dwarf shrimps as well as fan shrimps. The Nanus Cory is not an active hunter, but if a shrimp juvenile is very careless, it may be eaten more or less accidentally. Crayfish of all sizes or large-armed shrimp are not recommended as aquarium partners for the Corys , they can injure or even kill the bottom-dwelling Corys with their claws.
The beautifully patterned Nanus Cory is not an algae eater, as an omnivore it prefers mainly animal food: frozen food or bottom-dwelling live food such as shiny worms, grindal and tubifex or special food for Corys is suitable for feeding to the beautiful Corys. Corydoras nanus will also readily accept food flakes or food granules for omnivores in the aquarium.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
