The algae shrimp, also known as backstroke shr imp, is the wild form of the popular Red Fire shrimp. It used to be addressed as Neocaridina heteropoda, but this name has recently been revised to Neocaridina davidi. Here you get an egg bearing algae shrimp.
To give the shrimp babies a good start in life, we recommend Babyfeed.
At first sight it is not as spectacular in color as the red color form, but it offers many surprises and is amazingly variable in color. Especially in the community tank the females usually do not stay transparent for a long time, but amaze their keeper with a great variety of earth tones up to a deep dark brown or black marbled or even opaque coloration. More rarely, greenish, reddish or bluish animals are also present. Often the females of the algae shrimp or backstripe shrimp still show an attractive cream-colored dorsal stripe, which contrasts nicely with their dark patterning or coloration.
As the name implies, the algae shrimp likes to take care of young algae cover and other growth in the aquarium. As a scavenger and omnivore, it also removes dead plant matter, leftover food and carcasses of other aquarium animals before they can pollute the water and promote algae growth.
The algae shrimp Neocaridina davidi grows up to three inches in size when fully grown, with males remaining slightly smaller. It reproduces in freshwater and provides there for numerous offspring.
The peaceful algae shrimp are very suitable for nano aquariums, but also for community aquariums, provided that the co-inhabitants are peaceful and not too large. The algae shrimp can also be socialized with crayfish, freshwater crabs, snails and freshwater mussels without any problems. If you want to keep them together with other shrimps, you should pay attention to the water values on the one hand and on the other hand whether the animals can cross. 10 to 20 animals are a good initial stocking, because algae shrimp feel more comfortable in a group than alone. The algae shrimp does not require heating. Their robustness and subtle beauty make them a very good shrimp for beginners in invertebrate aquaristics.
Our food recommendation: The soft Mainfeed Softpads from NatureHolic are designed for daily feeding. They contain all the nutrients shrimp need for shell development, egg formation and growth. During production we pay attention to a gentle and environmentally friendly production, in which the vitamins and other valuable ingredients are preserved as far as possible.
Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planaria and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.
Expert Tip: We recommend when keeping fish the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.
