Balkan limpet (Nano) - Theodoxus dalmaticus
Native to Central to Southeastern Europe, the Balkan limpet is a great little racing snail that can actually reproduce in freshwater - a true rarity! Their small size allows these pretty snails to be kept in nano aquariums as well. The Balkan limpet belongs to the genus Theodoxus leaves plants completely alone, because it cares practically exclusively about biofilms and diatom deposits. - Garnelio
Description

The Balkan limpet or Balkan barge snail Theodoxus dalmaticus is a mermaid snail that is practically native to our corner. The Balkan limpet is a world novelty in aquaristics! The Balkan limpet lives in freshwater streams and sometimes in estuaries with brackish water. The Balkan limpet can tolerate medium to very hard water in the aquarium without any problems.

The nano-suitable Balkan limpets reach a shell length up to a maximum of 1.5 cm. They can be kept already in aquariums from 10 l. Their color ranges from light beige to reddish undertones, the fine patterns are dark and can look very different. Here every snail is an individual!

They feed mainly on diatoms and fine biofilms in the aquarium. They do not go to artificial food. The small aufwuchsfresser free the aquarium disks, the aquarium decoration and other hard surfaces in the aquarium from annoying deposits and from fine brown algae nests as well as from thin algae films. The Balkan Snail does not eat plants, nor does it eat long filamentous algae or other higher algae. A food that forms a feeding lawn, such as our snail feed from NatureHolic, can also be eaten by the snails. The Balkan limpet also likes to graze on the biofilms that form on brown foliage.

The Balkan limpet is not a hermaphrodite, but unfortunately the male and female snails cannot be distinguished from the outside. Therefore, if you want to breed, you should buy a small group of these snails to increase the likelihood of both sexes. Female Balkan Boat Snails lay tiny whitish to beige egg cocoons on hard substrate. Unlike other barge snails, these egg cocoons develop a few small snails that feed on the nutrient eggs in the cocoons. After about 30-60 days, juvenile snails viable in freshwater hatch from the eggs. So this barge snail can reproduce in the aquarium - an absolute specialty!

For newly established aquariums the Balkan limpet is not a suitable stock, because here not enough biofilms and algae cover have formed yet. Well-fed Balkan limpets have a foot that is at least as wide as the shell opening and does not look wrinkled.

Theodoxus dalmaticus from freshwater has a thick, tough shell. Specimens living in brackish water develop a thinner shell. The lid (also called operculum) closes tightly. Because of the operculum and also because of its round shell shape, this beautiful aquarium snail is not very vulnerable. For this reason the Balkan limpet can be socialized not only with shrimps, but with almost all fish, dwarf crabs and snails, provided that the aquarium companions do not specifically predate on snails.

Delivery size: 0,5 - 0,8 cm

Our food recommendation: With the Natureholic Snail Feed Power Paste you create a feeding lawn that is very well accepted by all aufwuchs feeding snails. Also delicate wild-caught snails like racing snails or staghorn snails, which are stressed after transport and do not go to conventional food, can be fed up well with it.

Our plant recommendation: Use for planting NatureHolic InVitros. These are free of snails, planarians and other unwanted co-inhabitants. Also free of algae spores, bacteria and fungi.

Expert Tip: We recommend for fish keeping the NatureHolic 3 Phase Liquid. The care set offers the best all-round protection for your animals. It ensures optimal conditions for successful breeding and keeping.

Actively prevent outbreaks: With the invisible Natureholic Snail Barrier you prevent the escape and loss of your snails from the aquarium.

Question: "Hello, I would like to ask whether these snails can be kept in a 15 gallon with other algae eating snails such as amano shrimp, viviparous viviparous snails, melaniodes malacuta, Lymnaea stagnalis and various planorbids species. I ask as although the aforementioned species are not primarily algae eaters and will consume other foods fed to them, they will eat any available algae they come across and may outcompete the nerites who can only consume algae? Can the nerites be fed artificially in some way?"

Hello Timothy, thank you fro your question! We feed algae plates, which the animals take well, our snailfeed and mainfeed for shrimp are also accepted as they contain high amounts of spirulina. You can keep them in the aforementioned tank. But be careful, they do not tolerate temperatures above 22 degree Celsius very well.

Question: "Hallo, da diese Schnecke bzgl. Temperatur mit kühlen 5 bis 23 Grad angegeben ist, die Frage, ob sie auch überlebt, wenn das Wasser durchgehend (also ohne jahreszeitliche Schwankungen) um die 24 Grad ist? MfG, Fritz"

Hallo Fritz, vielen Dank für deine Frage! Nein, die TIere können nicht einmal dauerhaft auf über 22 Grad gepflegt werden.

Question: "Hallo! Wollte fragen, ob die Schnecken auch im aufgesalzenen Osmosewasser gehen. Ca GH 6-8? Danke"

Hallo Thomas, vielen Dank für deine Frage! Wir empfehlen GH Werte ab 10 für die Tiere, umso härter umso besser, aber auch aufgehärtetes Wasser ist gut verwendbar.
