Forever Border Terrier

Border Terrier dog breed - playful dog for active familiesA good-natured playful dog that suits active families

The Border Terrier is a well-known escape artist, with the typical Terrier characteristics of being alert, often noisy with a passion for digging.

However, unlike most of its Terrier cousin breeds, they’re often open to living among other pets in the household. Especially if this was introduced from a young age.

Be warned though that their powerful hunt drive might cause them to chase smaller animals. So, consider pairing them with larger dogs and pets.

It’s easy to recognise a Border Terrier by their distinctive scruffy-looking weather-resistant coats. Their coats are made up of a short and dense undercoat with a topcoat that’s wiry.

According to the British Kennel Club, they’re known to have 10 breed standard colours. This includes blue and tan, dark grizzle, red, and wheaten.

Grooming a Border Terrier

It’s their dirt-repelling topcoat that often makes them fairly easy to groom. Often, you’ll be able to get away with a good weekly brush and a bath as and when needed.

However, because of their interesting coats, you’ll need to consider periodic stripping to maintain them. Many dog owners will opt to shave their coats instead, but you will typically start to see a much fluffier coat by doing this often.

What is a Border Terrier’s personality like?

Border Terrier's personality - active, lively and energeticSmall but mighty. That’s the easiest way to sum up this little dog’s big personality. They’re an active and bouncy dog breed that needs to be kept entertained.

A bored Border Terrier is often a naughty, noisy or destructive one. However, if you can keep them mentally and physically challenged then you’ll find a loyal and affectionate furry friend for life.

This independent and intelligent canine thrives in a home where they’re able to get involved with their family. They’ll lavish you with affection and love in return. They’re often really great with children so are a great breed for families.

Although they’re known noise makers, so they can make good watchdogs that alert you to anything unusual, they’re not exactly ferocious if an intruder actually enters your home. Their love of humans means that you might even see your dog being friendly to an intruder.

The best way to describe training Border Terriers is that they’re quick to learn but often slow to obey. They were originally bred to assist in foxhunts which means that they can comfortably think for themselves.

This is both a good and frustrating quality for some dog owners as they’ll take a little bit more patience and persistence than some other breeds. Although, for a Terrier breed they’re considered fairly easy to train.
