The sixties: flower power, demos, sexual liberation. Maria lets it all wash over her. She lives purely for her music, playing the violin. Her life is dominated by her father, who envelops both her and her mother in his closed, middle-class and boringly normal world. Both parents emigrated from Poland to Denmark, but they've never really felt at home. One day, Maria meets the new tenant, Miss Andersen. She will be Maria's first attempt to break out of her father's grasp. She also has an affair with one of the teachers at the conservatory, which will change her life.
