European lycope, Lycopus europaeus, Water hemp, Lycopus, from the Greek lykos (wolf) and pous (foot), or "wolf's foot", refers to the shape of the leaves. Water hemp, wolf's foot , wolf's paw, water horehound, water nettle, Christ's spear, Egyptian herb, crumene, rumwort.
The European Lycope is a perennial, non-aromatic herbaceous plant, which can reach 30 centimeters to one meter in height, or even 1.20 m, with a creeping stem and erect stems with a square section, marked with a furrow on each of the faces. The plant is glabrous or slightly pubescent. The plant is perennial due to its strain which produces numerous stolons. It is a helophyte-hemicryptophyte (see Raunkier classification).
The leaves, generally green in color, opposite-decussate, have an oval-lanceolate blade with an acute point and deeply toothed, and sometimes even divided at the base for the lower leaves. The petiole is short, or even absent for the upper leaves.
The small flowers (around 4 mm) are grouped in the leaf axils in false whorls of globular shape. The toothed calyx, covered with hairs, has five divisions ending in a point. The corolla is made up of four white lobes punctuated with red, forming a funnel ending in two lips, the upper lobe being slightly indented. The two fertile stamens protrude from the corolla, the two lower stamens are aborted. Flowering takes place from July to September.
The seeds are dispersed notably by aquatic birds.
