Vintage Bialetti Aluminum Moka Pot Espresso Maker - Circa 1960-80's
The recognition is immediate - the classic profile and design of this item is synonymous with Italy and coffee, or to be more precise - this is a traditional stove top espresso maker from Italy which was designed and introduced in 1933 by Alphonso Bialetti, an engineer who owned an aluminum foundry in his home village of Crusinallo in the northern Piedmont region.
In as found/used condition - made of durable cast aluminum - the handle and knob are made of a hard resin, possibly bakelite - both are intact and securely attached - there is some surface tarnish and scuffs consistent with usage and age.
Some passage of time may have occurred since this pot was last used (view photo #7) - the grounds funnel seemingly is fused (possibly due to improper cleaning and/or a calcium mineral build-up) within the bottom of the water chamber and the filter screen and rubber gasket look tired and in need of replacement - if one wishes to return this pot to active service, all of these parts are relatively inexpensive and can be readily sourced on-line - the upper espresso chamber is surprisingly quite clean.
My predisposition would be to simply place this pot on a kitchen shelf as a decorative item or add it to ones memorabilia collection as an early Bialetti collectable.
Markings & other distinctions:
The image of "the little man with the mustache" first appeared as a logo in 1958 and became the ensuing Bialetti moka pot trademark (view photo #3)
The underside of the lid is clearly embossed (view photo #9) with a variety of markings confirming this is a genuine Bialetti pot made in Crusinallo Italy
The collar is also engraved (view photo #4) .... "Moka Express .... made in Italy" (view photo #4)
Specs:
Stands approximately 6.5 ins tall from base to top of the knob - I make this one out to be the 6 oz capacity or 3 cup (demi-tasse) size
A great decor gift or add it to your collection of all things espresso.
